December 19th ~ Social Studies

Today we walked to the Middle School to watch their wax museum.  This was a great opportunity for students to see a little about what they would be working on in the months to come.  

All maps were DUE today.  They needed to be labeled and colored according to region.

December 19th ~ ALL Reading Blocks

Today students had a chance to present their group projects.  Each group presented the two projects they did on their class novel.  After presenting, each group member got a chance to rate the other group members.  They rated them on their participation, their work, and their attitude/cooperation.  

Homework:

  • Now is a great time to read and start working on your 3rd quarter AR goal.  DON'T take tests yet as it will still be counted in 2nd quarter.  I will let you know when I change the grading period.

December 18~ Social Studies

Today we went to the library. When we got back from the library we took our "states test" of the northeast region.

December 17th ~ Social Studies

Today students labeled a United States map with the state names and capitals.  Then they color coded it to break it down into the regions that we will be testing on.  

Homework:

December 16th ~ Social Studies

Today is Social Studies we took are stock market post test.  The fall round of the stock market has ended.  

There is no social studies homework.   

December 16 ~ ALL Reading Blocks

Today students continued to work on their group novel projects.  Today was the last class day to work on this project.  Those groups that are not finished will have to work on their project at home or they make work on it during recess time.

  • Any unfinished group project work
  • AR Reading ~ There is only 3 days left to reach your goal.
  • CBQMs are tomorrow!  Make sure you get lots of rest and eat a good breakfast.

December 13th ~ Social Studies

ALL MISSING ASSIGNMENTS WERE DUE TODAY!
If you did not get them turned in, then they will become a zero in the grade book.  

Today we wrote a letter to the King that gave us our charter for our adventure.  This allowed us to describe our adventures for others and become a part of history.  Your letter should be in letter format.  It needs to be dated.  We used Jan-March 1946.  If you got your charter from Spain, you are writing to King Ferdinand and Queen Isabella.  If you got your charter from Portugal, you are writing to King Henry.  Your letter needs to have at least three paragraphs with at least five sentences.  One paragraph needs to describe what the land looked like, one paragraph needs to tell how you voyage there and back was, and one paragraph needs to include your feelings.  Don't forget to sign your letter.  

Homework: Finish your letter.

Today students finished their explorer simulation.  Many students were fortunate to make it back home but a few stumbled upon tragedies.

December 10th ~ Social Studies

Today students boarded their ships.  We worked on our explorer simulation and spent the day looking for gold.   Thursday we will begin our journey home.

We also read the postcards we received from our postcard exchange.  

Homework: State test tomorrow!  Don't forget to study.  It will be over the north eastern states.  There is nine of them.

Library tomorrow....bring those books with you.  

December 10 ~ Blocks 3 & 4

Today students took their Unit 4 Pretest.  Both blocks worked on missing assignments. 

Block 4 ~ took notes on figurative language.  They created their own similes and metaphors.  Afterwards they started their group novel projects.

We continued working on our Geography Bee.  We will finish up the last two rounds on Monday.  We also had our pod meeting.

Today students took their Unit 3 post test.  After their test  they had to write a summary over one of their Unit stories.  They can choose Grandma Essie or The Paper Dragon.  Remember it needs to be hand print style.  That doesn't mean just trace your hand and fill it in.  You need to write a paragraph.  The hand can be used as a plan.  

Homework: ALL BLOCKS ~ Get your grade sheet signed.  Only 9 more days left to reach your AR goal and get on the 2nd quarter wall of fame.  You can do it!!!

December 4 ~ Social Studies

   Today students had library.  After library we took a test of the Northeastern States.  If you did not get a 100% this week you will need to take the test next week.  Be ready!!!

      Today students received book orders.  All book orders are due December 10th.  This is next Tuesday.  By having them in next week all orders should be in before Winter Break.  Remember that you can also order on-line.  You may send the orders back to school with the students or order on-line at https://orders.scholastic.com/MD7JN  .  

     Today was a center day.  Students completed two of the four centers.  Normally all center work is done is class.  However this week, if students do not complete their reading skill center they will need to complete that as homework.  

Center 1: Lit Circle
     Students should have read their novel and completed their job.  If these are not done, students receive a 0.  They need to stay up to date so we can have a good discussion on the book.  Each block/class/group is reading a different story.  

Center 2: Silent/AR Read
     Students have about 20 minutes to silent read.  They may read their novel or an AR book of their choice.  Also during this time they may take an AR test.  

Center 3: Fluency
     This week in fluency students are seeing how fast they can read in 5 minutes, 3 minutes, and 1 minute.   Their goal is to read quickly with 100% accuracy.  They will be recording this information in their notebook.  

Center 4: Reading Skill ~ Unit 3 Reading Skills Review (Homework if you did not finish in class!!!!!)
     This week students are reviewing their reading skills for our big Unit 3 test on Friday.  Below are the questions.  You will need to answer questions 1-26.   Once you have completed the review, then you will need to grade it.  Remember if you get it right you will put a star.  If you get it wrong put a check.

November 14th ~ Social Studies

Today students started sailing to America.  Along the way they had to overcome problems that dealt with supplies, navigation,  illness, and crew morale.  We will continue our explorer adventures next week.

November 11th ~ Social Studies

Today we received our first post card in the mail from the state of Washington.  This week we will be working on our Colorado postcards to send out to the states.

November 5 ~ Social Studies

November 4 ~ Social Studies

Today is social studies we continued learning about explorers   Students read Chapter 3, Lesson 3.  While reading they created a timeline of Christopher Columbus' life and Ferdinand Magellan's life.  Each explorer was in a different color.  

Homework: Timeline of the explorers if you didn't finish in class.  Don't forget to study the states!!!

November 4 ~ BLOCK 2-4 Reading

Today is reading we began a new story.  Our story this week is The Paper Dragon.  Students were given their vocabulary words and had to create an action for the word.  Once they had their action they presented in front of the class.

Today we started our new weekly story.  We will be reading The Paper Dragon.  Students were given their vocabulary words for the story.  They made vocabulary webs with a group.

October 29 ~ Social Studies

Wahoo!  We had the highest percentage today for movie character day!  Way to go Ms. McGee's homeroom.  Don't forget tomorrow is team day.  

Today we finished reading lesson 2 and adding dates to our timeline.  Students also began reading the new lesson and working on their Christoper Columbus timeline.  

Homework: Look up the navigational tools and take notes on them.  The two you need to look up are sextant and chronometer.  

October 29 ~ Reading All Blocks

Today students finished up with their centers.

Centers ~
     1. Lit Circle: Students received their new class novel.  We began our contract and divided 
         the book into sections.  Their first reading chunk and job is due November 5th or          
         November 7th.

     2. Silent Reading/AR ~ students read silently a book of their choice.  They may also take 
         AR tests during this time.  

     3. Fluency: Students timed each other on reading the fluency 4 syllable card.  

     4. Reading Skills - Steps in a Process: Students worked on placing steps in the correct 
          order.  

Homework: AR ~ Make sure you are reading 20-30 minutes every night.  Don't forget Lit Circles!

October 23 ~ Reading Block 3

Today students received their new reading notebooks.  This means that we were able to have our ripping party.  We pulled out some important information from our old notebooks and then ripped out our old pages (students began to realize how important it is for them to label their work and complete the work assigned).  Once our old notebooks were finished we labeled our new reading notebooks.  This is going to help with organization in reading for the next few quarters.  

Homework:  AR ~ Students should be reading every night for about 20 minutes.

October 15th ~ Social Studies

We finished Lesson 4 notes on People and Land.  Then students began answering Chapter 1 review questions.

Today students had the chance to make corrections to their Unit 1 test to gain back part of the points they lost.  We will be going back over this test later in the week.  Afterwards students wrote a summary about their favorite Unit 1 story.

Today we went to library.  Students then started working on lesson 3 in Chapter 1.  We are working on taking notes and pulling the important information out of our text.

October 7 ~ Social Studies

Today students finished reading Chapter 1 Lesson 2.  While reading students took notes on the Nation's resources.  Then we took a little quiz over it.

Homework: Finish notes from the lesson if you did not finish in class.  Many of you are missing your land forms book.  You have till Friday to get it turned in.  

October 7 ~ ALL Reading Blocks

Today we started week 3 reading warm-ups.  We then discussed the theme of unit 1: Time of My Life.  Students worked with a partner to tell how each story in our unit fit the theme.  Our five stories for the unit were: The Wise Old Woman, The Voyage of the Dawn Treader, Wilma Unlimited, The Wreck of the Zephyr, and Tornadoes.  In their reading notebook they should have a chart similar to the one below.

Congratulations to the Blue Baker Bulldog team!  Their team won the team contest for the week and will get a chance to eat lunch up in the room with Ms. McGee tomorrow.

Today we took the stock market pre-test.  We will be learning more about the stock market in the weeks to come.  The market has taken an interesting turn and we will watch what happens.  

October 3 ~ ALL READING BLOCKS

Today we did reading warm-ups and centers. 

Center 1: Lit Circle
     Block 1 ~ We reviewed our two jobs from last week: Illustrator and Literary Connector.  Then students drew to get their new job for next week.
      Blocks 2-4 ~ We reviewed our job from last week: Illustrator.  Students then learned a new job Literary Connector. 

All Lit Circle Books should be finished by next week.  

Center 2: Reading Skill ~ Dictionary Scavenger Hunt
     Students went on a scavenger hunt to answer questions about the dictionary. 

Center 3: Fluency ~ Timed Syllables
     Students timed each other on reading their Card 2 syllables.  Each time they read their syllables they had to get faster and faster.  Then students partner read a book on their level. 

Center 4: Silent Reading/AR
     Students read quietly an AR book of their choice.  During this time they may also take AR tests. 

Students have a little over 1 week left to reach their AR Goal.    


Normally we start Friday off with our reading quiz.  This week will be a bit different.

October 2 ~ ALL Reading Blocks

Today we did our Reading Warm-ups.  Then Mr. Cooper came in and went over their fluency and comprehension scores.  Each student made a goal to reach the next time they take the test.  Students then got a grade report summary.  They need to have this signed.  Any missing assignments can be turned in for full credit this quarter.

Homework: Get grade sheet signed.  Work on missing assignments.

Students had a chance to check on their stock market accounts and purchase more stock.
